Highlighting the main theme of the World Press Freedom Day 2006 Mass Media, Development and Poverty Alleviation, the day was observed in a befitting manner in Rajshahi. Mass communication oriented development organization CCD Bangladesh and Bangladesh Advanced Students Alliance (BASA) organized rally, meeting and open discussion in Rajshahi University (RU) today.

The colorful rally started from the premises of the central library of RU paraded the main thoroughfares of the campus. At the end of the rally, a meeting and open discussion were held in the east premise of the library. Above hundred students of RU, Rajshahi Govt. College, City College, New Govt. Degree College, Puthia Degree College, Baneswar Degree College and Madarbux Home Economics College actively took part in the rally and discussion.

Speakers in the discussion said, there developed no practice and environment of free press in Bangladesh and so there rise huge constraints in developing democratic system in the country. They stressed on social and political tolerance and commitment to ensure free press in the country. Among others, Administrative Officer of CCD Bangladesh Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, Program Coordinator A H M Abdul Hai, Campaign Officer Abdul Muttalib Jewel, Program Organizer Farzana Yeasmin Juicy, BASA Organizer A S M Anisur Rahman Litu, Arafat Ali Siddiquee and Mahmudul Hoque Mamun addressed the meeting.

Later on, certificates and T-shirts were handed over to the volunteer organizers of Rajshahi Tarunner Mela held recently in the city.
